This article was inspired by a hard drive revelation in our own office. A
recent switch from a 5400 rpm to a 7200 rpm in one of our computers made such a
noticeable difference in performance that we felt compelled to tell you about
it.
The hard disk can cause one of the severest bottlenecks in
your PC. While disk access times are measured in milliseconds, system RAM
performance is counted in nanoseconds. By optimizing your hard disk operation
you can eliminate teeth-grinding delays.
Hard disks have a rotation speed from 4,500 to 7,200 rpm. A
10,000 rpm drive just hit market. The faster the rotation, the quicker the
access. New hard disks read all sectors of a track in one rotation.
If you use a large database in your business or if you're
into playing games, the 7200 rpm hard disk will certainly give you that
performance edge.
